Women in ancient Rome

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

In Rome, women were regarded by men, except in cases of girls belonging to wealthy families, mainly according to their ability to be mothers.

Roman women spent their day exclusively in the house, occupied by daily tasks. Chastity and purity (privacy, decency) were the characteristics of good wife, who had to not interfere in the life of her husband. Women from the wealthiest families could have slaves to do the most tiring household tasks, while women of the people had to do everything by themselves. The education of children, however, was not suited to their task, in fact after the first few years of life, this was delegated to others. This quasi one-dimensional role of women does not distinguish Rome from other ancient societies, or, more generally, by most human societies before the emancipation of women in the industrial era. This quasi one-dimensional role of women does not distinguish Rome from other ancient societies, or, more generally, by most human societies before the emancipation of women in the industrial era.

Religious submission and subservience family are inextricably linked, the woman does not have a public life, it is prohibite to her to speak in public and teaching. Eve was to be seduced by sin, not Adam, revealing a weakness of character, typical of women, not suited to supporting roles or public to express their opinions.

The deities of the Roman house

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

The house of Roman was full of altars, temples and votive icons. The gods were part of the family life of the Romans and took care of all activities of the individual. The master of ceremonies was the pater familias, who make the sacrifices on the altar of the house for ritual.

Vesta: inside the house, there was a place where the sacred fire burned, Vesta exactly. It represented, by its flame, the Life. For this reason the fire should never be extinguished. The arduous task was entrusted to the mater familias. From time to time, were thrown into the sacred fire of the crumbs of bread.

Lares and Penati: a favorite cult of the Romans, the Lares and Penati guaranteed the prosperity of the house and fields. They were represented in small icons hanging on the walls of houses. In their honor, magic rites and sacrifices were made, so that nothing was missing to family members.

Mani: everywhere in the Roman houses there were statues of Mani. They represented the ancestors of the family. The Roman family, therefore, consisted not only of the members still alive, but also the dead, which was necessary to maintain the honor and respect. Janus: on the front door, was Janus bi-face. He watched, in this way, those who entered and exited by the home.

Culinary habits of ancient Romans

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

Discover the culinary habits of ancient Romans has long been a topic of great interest. Lovers of fine cuisine, in addition to discovering the old ways, are delighted to cook, taste and enjoy foods and beverages that the ancient Romans used to prepare for their own meals. In Ancient Rome they used to eat three meals a day: jentaculum (our breakfast), the prandium (our lunch) and coena (our dinner). The first meal, jentaculum, was very similar to our breakfast, eaten in the early hours of the morning. It was a simple and light meal of bread, cheese, dried fruit, honey, milk and wine, which was spiced with bread. The poorest people used to take the first simple meal of bread soaked in milk or wine.Shortly before noon, the second meal (prandium) was consumed on the day. This meal was eaten quickly and it was a cold meal based on legumes, vegetables, fruit and fish.

The cuisine of Ancient Rome was based mainly on the evening meal, the last meal of the day: the coena.Poorest families ended their day with a simple meal of beans and vegetables. For the noble families, however, the dinner was a time of fun, dialogue and meeting of family members, friends, protectors.

Vesuvius

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

Vesuvius, or more properly the Somma-Vesuvius, is a volcano that reaches a maximum height of 1281 meters. It is made by the oldest volcano of M. Somma, whose summit collapsed creating a caldera, and the most recent volcano of Vesuvius, who grew up within this caldera.
Volcanic activity in the Somma-Vesuvius area goes back at least 400,000 years ago, this is the age of some lavas found in deep holes of 1345 meters. The history of the volcanic area Somma-Vesuvius began about 25,000 years ago with the increase of the Somma due to predominantly eruptions of low energy. This activity lasted until about 19,000 years ago and has resulted in the formation of the volcanic area Somma. The northern part of this most ancient area is still well preserved and is represented by the Monte Somma.

With the first eruption of plinian pumice, which occurred 18,300 years ago, began the collapse of the volcanic area and the formation of the Somma caldera following the decay of part of the summit. After this event, volcanic activity and the subsequent phases of subsidence have contributed to the formation of the youngest volcano, Vesuvius. The activity of this volcano, born inside the caldera of Mount Somma, was characterized by great variability of both the type of eruptions of the chemical composition of magma emitted.Variability in eruptive behavior of Mount Vesuvius is due, in first approximation, to the alternation between periods of "open conduit", and long periods with "closed conduit", with no activity, followed by large Plinian eruptions.

PAINTINGS AND MOSAICS IN POMPEII

The most remarkable objects with which the interiors of Pompeii reward the labour of excavation, are paintings and mosaics. Frequent mention of these branches of art will be made in the course of this volume, and it seems expedient therefore to collect in a prefatory chapter such information respecting them as has been gathered by the diligence of learned men either from personal observation, or from the scattered notices of ancient writers. The subject of working in mosaic will not occupy us long. The art is still exercised with success, at least equal to that of the Roman workmen, as is proved by the magnificent copies of some of the best pictures of Italian masters recently executed in the Vatican. The most remarkable circumstance connected with the practice of it in ancient times is the profusion with which mosaics were produced, insomuch that the dwellings of a second-rate town abound in specimens rich enough to be transferred to the palaces of Naples, and to be enumerated among their most precious ornaments. The expense of such works is now so great, that they are rarely to be seen even in palaces.

The mosaics of Pompeii are chiefly composed of black frets, or meandering patterns, on a white ground, or white ones on a black ground : some of them, however, are executed in coloured marbles. We may refer to Mr. Donaldson's work on Pompeii, which contains coloured drawings of several, for a better notion of these beautiful floors, than our means enable us to give. In the same work are contained the plans of eight others, all elegant, and most of them intricate, taken from the Suburban villa; one of which is remarkable for being surrounded by a city wall with gates and towers; probably taken from that which then existed at Pompeii. The materials of which they are chiefly composed, are small pieces of black and white marble, and red tile, some largerthan others, so as to take deeper hold in the mortar than the rest, and thus form a sort of bonding course, which gave stability to the whole.

Pope Sixtus IV solemnly giving to the people of Rome in 1471 some ancient bronze statues, already stored at the Lateran, to form the nucleus of the Capitoline Museums.
The return of the remains of the city's past greatness has an even higher symbolic value for their placement on the Capitol, the center of religious life of ancient Rome and seat of the city's civil courts since medieval times, after a long period of neglect. The sculptures were initially placed on the exterior facade and the courtyard of the Palace of the Conservatives and soon the original group was enriched by successive acquisitions of finds from excavations urban and closely linked with the history of ancient Rome.

The mid-sixteenth century they had been placed in the Capitol, significant works of sculpture (among others, the gilded bronze statue of Hercules in the Forum Boario, the marble fragments dell'acrolito of Constantine from the Basilica of Maxentius, the three panels in relief with the companies of Marcus Aurelius, the CD. Capitoline Brutus) and important inscriptions (including the Capitoline Fasti, found in the Roman Forum).

The two colossal statues of the Tiber and the Nile, which is currently outside the Senatorial Palace, were transferred in the same period of the Quirinale Palace, and the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was led from the Lateran in 1538 by Pope Paul III.
